Lets first answer, what EXACTLY IS INFLAMMATION AND HOW DOES IT AFFECT MY BODY?
Inflammation is the natural process the body uses to protect it from harm. Your body’s white blood cells are activated to protect you from foreign invaders and infection. There are two types of inflammation.
If you’ve ever been stung by a bee or mosquito or cut yourself chopping veggies, you’ve likely seen inflammation first hand. The swelling, redness, and pain is localized inflammation. Your body produces this mechanism to fight off infection and repair damage to tissues. Similarly, inflammation will also appear from colds, the flu, and Covid-19.
What about chronic inflammation?
There are two types of inflammation: acute and chronic.
Chronic inflammation begins nearly the same way as acute. The body is trying to get rid of a foreign invader. However with chronic inflammation the invader is not an actual threat to the body, but a mistake in the immune system. With chronic inflammation, this system of attacking itself becomes a persistent state causing havoc all over the body.
Chronic inflammation is more gradual than acute inflammation. When it exists, symptoms may include:
Fatigue
Muscle aches and joint pain
Infertility
Constipation, diarrhea, and other digestive issues
Weight gain
Headaches/Migraines
Skin Rashes
Depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders
Frequent infections
Unlike with acute inflammation, these symptoms continue long-term or come and go over time.
Autoimmune Disorders
Autoimmune disorders (such as: rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, type 1 diabetes, ulcerative colitis, Raynaud’s phenomenon, sceloderma, and multiple sclerosis) exist when the body mistakenly fights its own tissues and produces damaging inflammation against itself.
Diseases linked to chronic inflammation
Inflammation and the harmful chemicals it produces can contribute to all of the following conditions:
Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia
Cancer
Anxiety and depression
High blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke
Type 2 diabetes
Allergies and asthma
Skin conditions like acne, eczema, and psoriasis
Arthritis
What does an inflammologist do?
As an Inflammologist, Shaina Simhaee has had experience treating clients with a broad range of inflammatory conditions and relieving them of their plaguing symptoms.
The treatment is fairly straightforward and easy. Together we find the root cause of the inflammation. Typically its a diet and lifestyle factor that we can easily adjust. Then we incorporate better healthier lifestyle strategies and healthy eating habits that further prevent reoccurrence of chronic inflammation. We go on a semi-strict anti-inflammatory diet that takes into account the client’s individual needs and requirements. We make adjustments that are sustainable in the long term.
When your body reaches homeostasis, it will no longer feel the need to fight against itself.
